Funko Pop Glossary

A complete guide to Funko Pop collecting terminology.

New to Funko Pop collecting? This glossary covers 20 essential terms every collector should know, from Chase variants to Vaulted figures. Understanding these terms will help you navigate the secondary market, evaluate deals, and communicate with other collectors.

C

Chase

A limited variant of a Funko Pop produced at roughly a 1-in-6 ratio. Chase figures often feature different paint jobs, poses, or glow-in-the-dark elements. They are identified by a gold foil sticker on the box and are typically worth significantly more than the common version.

Common

A standard, non-variant Funko Pop figure. Commons are the base version with no special features (no Chase, GITD, Flocked, etc.). They are typically the most affordable and widely available version of a figure.

Convention Exclusive

Funko Pops released exclusively at conventions like San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), New York Comic-Con (NYCC), Emerald City Comic-Con (ECCC), or Funko Fair. Convention exclusives are produced in limited quantities and often become highly valuable. Shared exclusives are also available at select retailers.

D

Diamond (Glitter)

A variant covered in a sparkly, glitter-like finish that gives the figure a diamond or crystalline appearance. Diamond Pops are popular display pieces and are typically retailer exclusives.

E

Exclusive

A Funko Pop that is only available through a specific retailer (e.g., Hot Topic Exclusive, Target Exclusive, Walmart Exclusive). Exclusives often have unique paint, sculpts, or features not found on the common version.

F

Flipper

Someone who buys Funko Pops at retail price with the sole intent of reselling them at a markup. Flipping is common with limited exclusives and Chase variants. The term is sometimes used negatively in the collector community.

Flocked

A variant with a soft, fuzzy texture applied to part or all of the figure. Flocked Pops mimic fur or fabric and are particularly popular for animal characters. They are usually exclusive to specific retailers.

Funko Fair / Funko Fun Days

Annual events where Funko announces new products and releases exclusive figures. Funko Fair typically happens in January and is a major event for the collecting community. Fun Days events at conventions feature ultra-limited releases.

G

GITD (Glow in the Dark)

A special variant where the figure or parts of it glow in the dark. GITD Pops are identified by a glow-in-the-dark sticker on the box. They are popular among collectors for their display appeal and often carry a premium over the standard version.

Grading

The process of evaluating a Funko Pop's box condition. Common grades include Mint (perfect), Near Mint (minor imperfections), and Damaged (visible creases, tears, or crushing). Box condition significantly affects resale value.

Grail

A highly sought-after and valuable Funko Pop, typically worth $100 or more. Grails are the "holy grails" of collecting — rare figures that most collectors aspire to own. They are often vaulted convention exclusives or early production runs.

M

A variant featuring a shiny metallic paint finish on the figure. Metallic Pops have a distinctive chrome-like appearance and are often retailer or convention exclusives.

N

NIB (New in Box)

A Funko Pop that is sealed in its original box and has never been opened. NIB is the most desirable condition for collectors and commands the highest prices. The box should be free of damage, creases, and fading.

O

OOB (Out of Box)

A Funko Pop that has been removed from its original packaging. OOB collectors display their figures without the box. Out of Box figures are typically worth 30-50% less than their NIB counterparts.

The official product line name for Funko's iconic vinyl figures with oversized heads and black eyes. Pop! Vinyl is the most popular Funko line, but the company also produces Dorbz, Mystery Minis, and other collectible lines.

PPG (Pop Price Guide)

A common abbreviation for "Pop Price Guide" — any service that tracks and reports Funko Pop market values. PPG values are based on actual secondary market sales data.

Pre-Order

Reserving a Funko Pop before its official release date. Pre-orders guarantee you'll receive the figure at retail price, which is important for exclusives and popular characters that may sell out quickly.

Protector

A clear plastic case (also called a "Pop Protector" or "soft protector") used to protect the box from damage during storage and display. Protectors are essential for preserving NIB value.

S

Sticker (Box Sticker)

The identifying sticker on a Funko Pop box that indicates exclusivity, variant type, or convention origin. Sticker types include Chase (gold foil), convention-specific (SDCC, NYCC), and retailer stickers. The correct sticker can significantly affect value.

V

Vaulted

When Funko retires a Pop figure and permanently stops production. Once vaulted, the mold is destroyed and no more units will be made. This fixes the supply, which often causes prices to increase over time as demand continues.
